What Should I Know About Attending Online College?

Online college is becoming an increasingly popular and respected way to earn an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree, and it’s easy to see why. Online colleges offer most of the same degree programs and even much of the same curriculum as traditional schools, but with the added perk of allowing students to access these programs from the comfort of their homes.

Accredited online schools also offer many of the benefits of traditional colleges, including highly-trained instructors and professors, interaction with classmates and a rigorous course of study. The key difference is the format in which these benefits are delivered to the student.

Online colleges offer their classes either partially or entirely over the Internet. All work is turned in online and assignments are made available through programs specially designed for easy access by students. Most students even take their tests and quizzes online. Depending on the online program, you may receive a lecture by Web conference with other students at a specified time or receive online reading materials to study. Other online professors ask their students to purchase books that go along with their online instruction, as they would for traditional classes.

Students communicate with professors and their fellow classmates through e-mail, chat, Web forums and occasionally by phone. Online bulletin boards allow students to share study tips and help each other learn. This online format lets student have 24/7 access to the course syllabus, due dates, assignments and study guides.

It is important to know before enrolling in an online college that for some online programs, students will be required to do necessary work outside a computer setting. For example, online nursing and dental hygiene programs usually require the student to take part in clinical study outside their home in a real-life work setting, while all other instruction is done online. Other online programs require that students complete an internship. This hands-on training is vital to the work the student will do upon graduation.

Another good thing to know about online colleges is that many offer accelerated degree programs, allowing students to focus on their degree and move along much faster than they might at a campus-based school. Many students also find the flexible scheduling of online colleges to be useful if they are working adults. In fact, many online degree programs are designed so that students can work during the day and attend college online in the evenings.
