What Information Should I Look for in Online College Reviews?

The great thing about online college reviews is the sheer number of topics that get touched on because they are compiled in one convenient place. You’ll discover after examining several of these reviews that topics will turn up that you may have never even thought to look for before seeking out reviews.

For example, many reviews give a brief history of the school and a shortened version of the school’s purpose and mission statement. Or maybe the review will inform you that the college you’re considering was the first of its kind to offer degrees and training online for the vocation you’re interested in.

While you will most likely dig up a number of unexpected items of interest, there is some information you should purposefully look for. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Does the school offer the degree level you are seeking? It will do you no good to get going with a great program that only offers bachelor’s degrees if you are ultimately seeking your master’s degree. Most solid reviews will tell you the degree level offered at a school, or if the school offers degrees at all.
  • Does the school offer accelerated programs? If you want to finish out your degree quickly you may want to see which schools offer degree completion programs. For example, if you are a working registered nurse, you may be interested in an online college that offers an accelerated RN to BSN program.
  • How long do courses at the school last and how long does it take on average to complete the program? It is helpful to find out if your school offers the traditional spring, fall, summer semesters or breaks courses down into quarters or other modules. This information lets you know from the start how many years you will need to commit to the online program so you can be prepared.
  • Did the review describe the programs as rigorous? Don’t shy away from schools where reviews report that professors make students work hard for their degrees. You won’t get much from a school that gives out A’s left and right.
  • Is the school fully online or partially online? Many working professionals need to attend classes completely online in order to balance work and school appropriately. Check for reviews that describe their programs as “fully online” if that’s the format you need.
