How Does Online College Work?

In some ways, online college works in the same way traditional college does. Students receive instruction and assignments from professors, interact with fellow students, read and study course materials, complete their homework, take tests and quizzes, write essays and complete solo and group projects. The big difference is the absence of a classroom—all your work and all communication is done online.

Instead of sitting down in a traditional classroom, students “go to class” by logging into a software program offered by the college for online students. Using this software program, students can access their syllabus, receive their assignments and take scheduled tests and quizzes. The program used is often Blackboard, but some, like the one used at Rasmussen College, use a platform called Angel. Whatever the name of the software program you use, the program typically allows the student to download assignments from professors, communicate via e-mail and chat and participate in conversations on online discussion boards. Some professors post videos or host live Web chats to further the educational experience. Kaplan University ‘s online programs even allow for students to take online “field trips.”

To access these kinds of programs, students log in with a username and password, like they would for an e-mail account. Students then have the ability to access all their academic resources, such as the individual courses the student is taking. Online colleges offer support services and even technical support for those experiencing problems with the program. Many online schools provide their students with remote access to library services, including books, microfilm, online databases, reference materials and other publications.

There is less rigidity associated with online courses. While students still must stay on schedule to complete their work, most online degree programs let you choose one of several due dates in a week so that students have more flexibility for turning in assignments and taking tests. Nights and weekends are also more often available for logging in to class. For this reason, online college is a good option for people who work full time.

You can attend an online college from any place in the world you have access to high-speed Internet. This means that your “classroom” can be a coffee shop, your home, a break room or any other available space. Online classes can be taken practically anywhere you have a slice of peace and quiet.

And when it’s all done? Many online schools offer career services to assist former students with their resumes and help graduates land jobs.
